Can the Bird perch that feel like sand paper hurt the birds leg grip?
My 3 year old conure started to limb all of a sudden. My husband says it is because of the sandy covered perch. The bird has had this perch for 2 years. It is small on the side of the cage, he stands on it to look at his imagine in his mirror. He is limbing on his left foot when walking on the table
Yes, sandy perches can make your birds feet sore, especially if this is the only kind of perch in the cage. I never recommend sandy perches, the concrete ones are much less harmful. Every bird needs one concrete perch to help him groom his nails and beak. However, it should not be the only perch in the cage. Your bird needs to have the standard wooden perch, it does not have to be the dowel shaped ones. Perches that are curved and go from small to large are good because it exercises all of the leg muscles. Rope perches are also desirable because the bird has to use sort of a different grip on it and uses different mucsles too. Take out the sandy perch and let your birds feet heal. Then put in a concrete perch. (along with at least one other kind) Please read my profile
