The Three Caballeros

The Three Caballeros

$13.27

As a Disney oddity, they don’t get much odder than Three Caballeros. Donald Duck receives a birthday package from South America, and the film proceeds to unravel like some peyote-induced hallucination. It starts out reminiscent of other Disney films, where shorts are cobbled together, such as “Make Mine Music” or “Fun and Fancy Free.” The film has vignettes such as “The Cold-Blooded Penguin” and “…

Based upon T.H. White’s beloved novel, this Disney-fied version chronicles the tutoring of the Once and Future King, Arthur, as handled by the magician Merlin. Sword was a portent of things to come, with slapstick upbraiding storytelling, and cultural in-jokes substituting for wonder. But there’s much to enjoy here as Merlin shows Newt, the young Arthur, things that will help him become the ruler …

A Short History Of Kiting – From China To The World by Peter Bruce

Nowadays, we think of the kite as a child’s plaything, but this isn’t the case. There are a great range of kites used for many uses, even by the armed forces! There are kites used in competition, racing, other sports such as snow-kiting, and also for eminently practical purposes, like carrying provisions or radio antennae. Although Chinese Kites are a particularly elegant category of modern day kites, China was in fact the kite’s country of origin. Kites were first flown about 2,800 years ago and the first use was perhaps for the military, as is often the case with any new technology!

Although there is some evidence that kites were used in quite a basic form in Polynesian countries, it is the Chinese who developed the craft into a truly effective art. The early kites were for the most part square or oblong and were sometimes big. By some accounts, they were employed for communications, carrying supplies and even men! In the twentieth century, the army used them for measuring wind strength, measuring distance and for sending signals between troops. They didn’t usually have tails, but trailed a long bow-line which kept them stable. War kites were decorated with terrible motifs, while traditional characters were used for other uses.

Kites Used For Science

Benjamin Franklin used a kite to test his theory about lightning being a type of electricity. Of course, he was right, and just escaped with his life! During the latter half of the 18th century, and up until nineteen hundred and ten, kites were used extensively by scientific bodies in many applications, like taking photographs from the air, communications, carrying men, and experiments in flight – not so distant from the uses employed in the kite’s earliest history!

Modern kites are quick, very light and super responsive to wind and control. The hang-glider is of course the ultimate evolution of this venerable craft, having achieved man’s goal of gliding like a bird and nothing attaching him to the ground below.

Kite flying is very popular in Asian countries, sometimes taking the form of ‘kite-fighting’, when opponents try to catch each others kite lines, or take an opponent kite down to earth. These triangular shaped kites don’t usually have a tail, as they have to be fast and responsive to out manoeuvre the opponent’s kite. Across India , they are flown extensively during festivals and are painted with spirits and devils, which provide an entertaining spectacle. There are competitions for aerobatics and height, and a peculiar form of ballet! Some countries specialize in musical kites, attaching various objects to the tail to make musical notes – In Vietnam these are flutes, in Bali violin type strings and in Malaysia, small rows of gourds for the wind to blow.

Kites For Fighting

This is very popular in several countries in Asia, and more so than in China. Even though its a little difficult to determine who has actually won a competition, competitors are perpetually searching for new strategies for beating an opponent in creative ways. In Pakistan, a common practice is to coat the kite string with a sticky substance and then pull the string through a mixture of coarsely powdered glass. When the string passes across the opponent’s kite string, it behaves like a saw and severs the string, letting the kite fly away. Kites in Asia are almost as ornate as the Chinese variiety.

Peter Bruce is a freelance journalist operating out of Toulouse in France. Subjects covered range from chinese kites to kites in Asia.
