My cat swallowed alot of string, how long should i wait to take him to the vet?
its not the kind of string for cloths, but the kind thats attached to cat toys. He ended up swallowing about 2-3 feet of string. My first instinct was to grab him and stick my finger down his throat to see if it was stuck in the back of his throat. but there was nothing there. I called the vet right away and she said to wait to see if he pops it out, but if he starts acting lathargic (spelling ??)or throwing up and the string dosnt come out, then to bring him in. But she didnt say how long to wait. has anyone else gone thru this? How long should I wait? i feel so horrible about it. I just moved so i’ve been busy unpacking and getting settled in, they have a automatic feeder and it was empty, so he ate the string probly cause he was hunger. this hole moving process with him has been horrible. On moving day he escaped so i had to wait till 4am on the porch till he came back to the old house. I woke up cause he jumped on my lap and meowed right in my face!
I think two or three days should be about right. The vet gave you good advice. You coulfd always call her back and ask how long you should wat before you start worrying.
Be sure to keep him inside, preferably permanently. You already know he will go back to your old house He could get hit by a car or attacked by a dog if he does it again.
The move is confusing to him (and stressful to you, I’d say) so give him as much extra love and attention as you can and don’t be hard on yourself. Even contented cats who aren’t hungry sometimes swallow string, thread with and without needles, and similar stuff. We owners have to be careful not to give them the chance.
The answer above this one made a good point. The string may come out stretched out, not in a wad or bunch. He may have some dangling out of his anus and some still inside him when he finishes a bowel movement. Don’t pull on it. Cut it off an inch or so from his body if there is still some inside him. It may take several bowel movements to get it all out.
