About Us
The big event of the campaign was an American import, but the aftermath may still yet be continental. The Germans have long enjoyed colour-coding their myriad coalition possibilities: in 2005, the Traffic Light Option – socialist (red), liberal (yellow) and Green – confronted the more outlandish Reggae Alternative (the Christian Democrat colour being black, a CDU-liberal-Green coalition would …

Electric Yellow Cichlid (3.5-4 Length)

Electric Yellow Cichlid (3.5-4 Length)

$27.99

Electric Yellow Cichlid Also known as Yellow Lab, Yellow Labidochromis, Blue Streak Hap, Yellow Prince, or Utaka (Malawi). The brilliant yellow color with vivid black striping of the Electric Yellow Cichlid becomes more apparent with age. This species was first identified in 1956, where it was named caeruleus or “blue” in Latin. The blue comes from the dorsal fin changing to this color in breeding males. The dominant male in a tank will have the brightest yellow coloration. It is also known as a Yellow Lab, due to its coloration and its genus, Labidochromis. The yellow color variation is naturally occuring and comes from Nkhata Bay in Lake Malawi. It is best for this fish to be kept in a tank with several hiding spots consisting of rubble, stones, and rocks forming caves and mounds. Subdued lighting or plenty of places with shade is highly suggested.

Zoanthus sp. Yellow-eyed Blue Polyp Rock

Zoanthus sp. Yellow-eyed Blue Polyp Rock

$99.99

Zoanthid polyps are one of the collector’s items of the reef trade. Many different color varieties and combinations exist and are sought after within the trade. They are easy to frag and can spread to cover a surface rapidly under the proper conditions. Zoanthid polyps’ requirements can vary depending on the variety. More brightly colored colonies can require higher light than more subdued polyps. All are also filter feeders and can be target-fed with meaty foods like zooplankton and baby brine shrimp. They should have moderate flow to carry food to and waste away from the polyps. Zoanthid polyps secrete a toxin known as “palytoxin”. This substance is known as one of the most powerful and dangerous toxins in nature, but a reaction beyond a mild skin rash is very rare. Avoid coming into contact with Zoanthid polyps for prolonged periods or with any open cuts or wounds; the use of gloves when handling your polyps is recommended.

Pomacentrus auriventris Yellow Belly Damsel

Pomacentrus auriventris Yellow Belly Damsel

$6.99

Three blue damsels from the Pomacentrus genus are very common in the aquarium trade and all have very similar common names that may even be interchanged in some references, including “Electric Blue Damsel” or “Neon Blue Damsel”. These three damsels are the Allen’s Damsel ( P. alleni ), the Yellow Belly Damsel ( P. auriventris ) and the Neon Damsel ( P. coelestis ). A few other less common damsels also resemble these three. The Yellow Belly Damsel ( P. auriventris ) is metallic blue and may sometimes be iridescent as well. The bottom half of the fish and the tail is bright yellow or gold, usually forming a sharp L-shaped color change towards the rear of the fish. Damsels and chromis both come from the Pomacentridae family, which they share with Clownfish, a close relative and another very popular group of aquarium fish. Their temperament can range from very peaceful to quite aggressive and territorial. Chromis (fish from the genus Chromis ) tend to be more peaceful than the rest but can also be more delicate. Other common genuses of damsels include Amblyglyphidodon , Chrysiptera , Dascyllus , Neoglyphidodon , Pomacentrus , Stegastes and others. These fish are generally not picky eaters. In the aquarium, they will usually feed on flakes and pellets but should also be given fresh or frozen algaes and meaty foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, planktons, krill, shrimp, scallop and similar items. Damsels can become very territorial as they become established in the aquarium. Some species will defend their territory especially aggressively; use caution when stocking the aquarium since their small sizes can be deceiving; mature or established damsels may pick on smaller or weaker fish or on new arrivals. Some damsels retain the same appearance throughout their entire lives while others undergo a radical color change as they mature from juveniles to adults. A few may get more colorful as adults but most change from very colorful juveniles to bland, more subdued adults. Melanochromis johanni Electric Blue Johanni - Small

Melanochromis johanni Electric Blue Johanni – Small

$5.99

Mature males will develop a black and blue color pattern, usually a black body with blue horizontal stripes. Females are brilliant yellow-orange in color. Electric blue johanni have more intense blue srtipes. They are mouthbrooders and the female will brood the fry in her mouth until they are old enough to be released. Feed them cichlid and spirulina flakes, pellets, and frozen formulas periodically.

Labidochromis sp. Mbamba Yellow Dorsal

Labidochromis sp. Mbamba Yellow Dorsal

$8.99

This attractive Mbuna features bright blue coloration with black stripes, very similar looking to the Pseudotropheus Demasoni. The dorsal and other fins are bright yellow, as the common name would imply. While not as aggressive as other Mbuna, Labidochromis will fight amongst themselves, so they are best one to a tank unless the tank is very large. They enjoy a diet rich in algae and vegetable matter. A staple flake, along with the occasional treat of meaty frozen food is a good diet. Tank decor should contain plenty of rockwork, a suitable substrate for maintaining water hardness, and some plants that can handle the higher pH. They are maternal mouth brooders, meaning the female will carry the eggs and fry in her mouth for protection.

Aulonocara baenschi Yellow Peacock - Adult

Aulonocara baenschi Yellow Peacock – Adult

$29.99

Aulonocaras are called Peacock Cichlids due to the fantastic coloration developed by dominant males. They are Malawi mouthbrooders, and there are many color variants that have developed within species at different points in the lake. Aulonocara baenschi hails from Nkhomo Reef near Benga, Malawi. Dominant males feature electric yellow bodies with blue highlights on the face, tail, and flanks. Females have a drab appearance which is characteristic of the genus. Peacock cichlids may be housed with other species of Lake Malawi fish with similar temperament. They should not be housed with other Peacocks unless ample room is provided, and males may not develop brilliant colors due to dominance issues. Research will help the aquarist pick out the most appropriate fish to mix. Aulonocara will accept both flake or pellet food soon after being introduced into the aquarium. A variety of foods is recommended to encourage coloration and supply the fish with appropriate vitamins and minerals. They may also be fed frozen foods as a healthy treat.

Cryptocentrus cinctus Yellow Watchman Goby

Cryptocentrus cinctus Yellow Watchman Goby

$16.99

The Yellow Watchman Goby ( Cryptocentrus cinctus ) varies in color from a vibrant yellow to whitish-grey with blue dots located around the eye and the operculum and faint vertical bars. They stay fairly small but are also quite territorial for their size. Watchman Gobies ( Cryptocentrus sp. ) are best known as part of the group of gobies known as “Shrimpgobies” or “Prawn Gobies”. They form symbiotic relationships with certain pistol shrimp. These shrimp build and maintain a burrow for them both to live in, and the goby defends the lair and supplies food. Shrimpgobies are also minor sandsifters but will not sift as much as those generally referred to as “Sleeper Gobies” ( Valenciennea sp. ) or “Hover Gobies” ( Amblygobius sp. ). Watchman Gobies from the genus Cryptocentrus are similar to other shrimpgobies but generally get more aggressive, both towards other fish and, especially with larger fish, towards ornamental inverts like shrimp and crabs (except for their shrimp partner, if they have one). They are not as skinny in their body shape and have very large mouths. Avoid keeping Watchman Gobies with other shrimpgobies or in small tanks where their aggression may become more pronounced. These gobies will eat a variety of frozen foods and possibly flake and pellet. Gobies prefer a tank with plenty of rocky hiding places. They get along with most tankmates, but can be aggressive toward other gobies. Gobies are known jumpers; when startled or threatened, they have been known to jump out of uncovered aquariums. Always keep the tank covered and provide plenty of hiding places for this fish to retreat to. Visit That Fish Blog for more information from our marine biologists on Gobies , Pistol Shrimp and other aquarium-related topics!

Nanochromis parilus Blue Congo Cichlid

Nanochromis parilus Blue Congo Cichlid

$14.99

The Blue Congo Cichlid is a unique little dwarf cichlid from slow moving waters in the Congo. They have tan bodies with violet-blue iridescence. Their tail has a distinct striping pattern of blue and red on the bottom half, and may have yellow spots in the top half. Blue markings adorn the face and belly, and the anal fin is red with blue speckles towards the tail. This is a tough little species that will not tolerate others of its own species in a small territory. Keep them as a pair, unless your tank is very large. Other cichlids that are mild-tempered but tough may be housed with these fish. Feed them a variety of foods including frozen treats, flakes, and small pellets. Tank decor can consist of mostly rockwork, caves, driftwood, a soft substrate, and plants. This species is a substrate spawner.

Lamprologus ocellatus Yellow Ocellatus

Lamprologus ocellatus Yellow Ocellatus

$19.99

Lamprologus ocellatus are endemic to Lake Tanganyika. Both the males and females are gold-tan in color with a streak of shiny blue scales along the flanks. Males are significantly larger than females. These are shell-dwelling cichlids, meaning they inhabit abandoned snail shells. They situate their particular shell in the sandy bottom of the lake, and guard it quite fiercely, as it us used for shelter and spawning. It is quite a sight to watch these little fish squabble over various shells. Because of their small size, “Occies” should only be kept with smaller, non-predatory cichlids, or ideally in a small species set-up. They may be kept as a harem with one male to 3 or 4 females in a tank of about 20 gallons. Be sure to keep more snail shells in the tank than fish, as they will fight over shells. Be sure you have fine, sandy substrate so they can bury their shell to their liking. Ocellatus are “micro-predators”, meaning their diet is carnivorous, but because of their small size, they eat tiny brine shrimp, zooplankton, or other smaller sized morsels. For breeding, be sure to feed frozen or live foods. Otherwise, they will happily accept flake.

Spathodus erythrodon Blue Goby Cichlid

Spathodus erythrodon Blue Goby Cichlid

$24.99

The Blue Goby Cichlid makes an interesting and unique addition to a cichlid community. They have a rounded snout and a small, stout body, only growing to about 3 inches. They are colored to blend against the subtrate in clear, swallow waters of the lake shore. Their bodies may appear dark or light gray with speckles of blue and yellow across the dorsal half and face. These cichlids are herbivores and spend most of their tiime hopping along the substrate or perching on rocks as gobies often do. They will eat green algeas that grow on the rocks, but should be fed foods like spirulina and vegetable tabs to round out their appetite.

Apogon cyanosoma Yellow-striped Cardinalfish - Small

Apogon cyanosoma Yellow-striped Cardinalfish – Small

$19.99

Yellow-striped Cardinalfish ( Apogon cyanosoma ) have beautiful solid yellow-orange horizontal stripes. The background coloration varies from brilliant white to iridescent blue. Cardinalfish are often overlooked in the aquarium trade but many make hardy, peaceful and even schooling additions to reef and fish-only aquariums. Species available in the aquarium trade are most often from the Apogon , Pterapogon and Sphaeramia genuses. Some are nocturnal and will hide for most of the day but others will remain out in the open during the day once acclimated to the aquarium. Many cardinals are schooling and can be kept in groups, especially as juveniles, but some larger or more aggressive cardinals should be kept alone or in large schools. Larger cardinals may prey on smaller ornamental crustaceans and, in some species, small fish but most are community fish and can be kept with other peaceful to moderately active tankmates. They will not bother corals or most inverts; some often swim and hover in and around the branches of corals and spines of larger urchins. Most cardinals are not picky eaters. With time, they may accept flakes and pellets but they can be giving a varied diet of meaty foods like brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, planktons and other similar items. Most cardinals are mouth brooders; the will hold their eggs in their mouth and fast until the young hatch and can feed on their own.

Acanthurus pyroferus Yellow Mimic Tang - Medium

Acanthurus pyroferus Yellow Mimic Tang – Medium

$39.99

Adult Acanthurus pyroferus tangs are usually known as “Chocolate Tangs”. They have olive-brown bodies, darker fins, and orange just behind the gill openings. The gill covers themselves are edged in black and the pectoral fins are yellow. As juveniles, these tangs mimic pygmy angels from the Centropyge genus: Lemonpeel Pygmy Angels ( C. flavissima ) with a yellow body color and blue on the edge of the gills and around the eyes, Half Black Pygmy Angels ( C. vroliki ) with grey in the front and black on the back half, or Yellow Pygmy Angels ( C. heraldi ) with a solid yellow body. The species they mimic depends largely on the region the tang was collected from and the angels present in that area. Tangs and Surgeonfish are some of the most popular and common fish found in the aquarium trade. This group includes several genuses that can be associated with the various common name groups although “Surgeonfish” and “Tang” are often used interchangeably: Acanthurus (“Surgeonfish”), Naso (“Unicorn Tangs”), Ctenochaetus (“Bristletooth Tangs”) and Zebrasoma (“Tangs”). They are found in almost every tropical oceans and in almost every color and pattern. The common names ?? 1/2surgeonfish?? 1/2 or “doctorfish” comes from the tiny scalpel-like spine at the base of the fish’s tail. They use this spine as defense and will extend the spine if threatened. You may witness the tang shimmying up against another tang or fish; this is a sign of aggression as they may be using this spine to ward off the other fish. Always use caution when handling or netting a tang since this spine can become caught or cause injuries. Tangs and Surgeonfish are omnivores but a large part of the diet of most species consists of algae and plant matter. Tangs should also be given some meaty food to round out their diet. However, tangs that are fed primarily meaty foods over a long period of time are more likely to suffer from head and lateral line erosion (HLLE). HLLE disease in the short run is not fatal, but over time if the disease continues to progress the fish will stop eating and become lethargic and susceptible to other infections which may eventually contribute to its demise. The best treatment is prevention; maintain excellent water quality and feed a rich and varied diet. Supplementing with a multivitamin (A, D, E, B complex, and Iodine) may also help prevent further erosion. Tangs are generally community fish and get along with most other tankmates. Most do not bother corals and can actually help keep nuisance algae trimmed and under control, especially “Bristletooth Tangs” from the Ctenochaetus genus. Tangs may get territorial and aggressive towards similar tangs, so always use caution when keeping these fish together or with other fish that have a similar body shape or coloration. Visit That Fish Blog for more information on Tangs and Surgeonfish and other aquarium-related topics from our marine biologists and aquatic staff.
