Bird intelligence … Birds of prey and parrots vs Ravens?
I always thought that birds of prey like hawks, falcons or eagles were smart. But I was reading that crows, ravens and parrots were much more intelligent. How do they compare?
Almost all agree that ornithologists members of the corvid family (which includes magpies, crows, ravens and jays) are the most intelligent of all bird families. In fact, crows test or above the level of chimpanzees in many cognitive studies, including demonstrating the ability to solve (not just memorize the answer to) basic math problems and create tools for specific tasks of the raw materials are in their environment. In a different measure of intelligence, several species can remember exactly where jay buried hundreds of acorns before the winter, even after several months have passed. crows and ravens have been probably the cognitive skills test more than any other species of birds. (A great book on the subject is "Bird Brains: The intelligence of crows, ravens, magpies and Tiles" by Candace Savage.) In For members of the parrot family (parakeets, cockatiels, parrots, parakeets, parrots, parakeets, etc), many species are easily trainable and have a remarkable ability to mimic a wide range of complex sounds, but his cognitive abilities are not up to par with the members of the corvid family. The parrot family member only to demonstrate the use of tools in nature is the palm cockatoo of Australia. Some members of the family of raptors (birds of prey) such as the Harris hawk, a demonstration of social intelligence in a coordinated hunt in family groups, but again, the evidence of research have not shown the same level of Advan cognitive skills to carry out the crows. Hope this helps.
