How long should a parakeet beak get before it needs to be trimmed?
My bird has a very long beak, and I know this isn’t normal, maybe its all the high protein carrots I have been feeding to him that has made it grow so quickly, anyone have any logical advise? Do I need to take him to the local bird vet to have this delicate procedure done?
Mouse: Thanks for the advise, he does have a cuttle bone in the cage, but to be on the safe side, I think I will get him to the vet, the type of vet that takes care of feathered friends. Thanks again.
Healthy birds never need their beaks trimmed. Carrots will not be causing this growth.
What is the main food he’s being fed and how old is the bird?
If he eats mostly seed then that is the problem. One of the many causes of beak overgrowth is a damaged liver, why would the liver be damaged? Because seed is a very bad thing to feed to parrots, low in vitamins/minerals protein and enzymes, but very high in fat & carbs. It’s like feeding doughnuts to a human 24/7.
Go see an avian vet (not a local cat/dog) and they will lead you in the right direction.
