Parrot Care: Bird Cages, Food and Playtime
There are many varieties of parrots that you can choose from for your next companion bird. Parrots make wonderful, loyal and beautiful pets as long as they are properly cared for. Assuming you are dedicated and committed, caring for your pet parrot will be rewarding, fulfilling and enjoyable. Follow my instructions below and you’ll have at least a basic idea of what your parrot requires.
- First you will need to search through numerous bird cages before you find the perfect one for your new parrot. The size and type of parrot will denote they particular cage your will need. However, in most cases bigger is always better. At the very least your parrot should be able to easily stretch the full span of its wings inside of the cage. Also make sure that the slats aren’t too wide, ¾ inch is usually the most ideal for most parrots.
- Once you purchased your cage, line the bottom with an organic substrate. Corn cobs may be good, or you can stick with basic clean paper. Just make sure that you clean the bottom of the cage on a daily basis.
- Fill your parrot’s cage with toys, a perch and water and food bowls. Make sure that you are purchasing the proper equipment for your parrot species. Some parrots are more destructive than others and you will need to invest in more durable toys etc.
- Every week you should thoroughly disinfect your parrot’s cage. Make sure that you use extremely hot water and a non-toxic, bird-friendly cleaner.
- Make sure to feed and water your bird daily. Most parrots thrive on fresh fruits and vegetable in addition to their daily pellets. Make sure to clean out any left over food daily.
- Spend at least an hour per day interacting with your parrot. Parrots are incredibly social birds and if they do not receive enough human contact they may resort to maladaptive behaviors.
